Orthotic interventions use specialist devices to support posture, alignment and movement. These include ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs), spinal braces and dynamic Lycra garments. Orthoses are designed to improve function, protect body shape and reduce the risk of pain or long-term complications.
At StarPhysio we can carry out detailed gait analysis and postural assessments to identify the most appropriate orthotic prescription. We work closely with expert orthotists, including John Florence Orthotics and the London Orthotics Company, and draw on the internationally recognised work of Elaine Owen in gait analysis and orthotic management.
In addition to standard orthotic provision, we also use innovative approaches such as Turtle Bracing, which offers a flexible and child-friendly alternative to traditional plaster casting.
What is turtle bracing?
The Turtle Brace is a type of mouldable thermoplastic splinting system that offers a modern alternative to plaster casting. The brace is warmed, fitted to the child and fastened with a zipper, then hardens as it cools. It can be reheated and reshaped many times, making it particularly useful for children who are growing or require staged adjustments as part of their therapy programme.
Who is it for?
Orthotic interventions are suitable for children and young people with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, neuromuscular conditions and other disabilities affecting posture, gait or body alignment. Turtle Bracing is particularly helpful for children who need gradual improvement of joint range or a more flexible, practical alternative to plaster casting.
