Postural care is an approach designed to support the body in safe and healthy positions throughout the whole day and night. For children with complex disabilities, time spent lying, sitting, standing or moving can have a big impact on comfort, body shape and long-term health. Without careful management, children may develop contractures, pain and secondary complications. Postural care helps to prevent these problems by making sure every position is protective, supportive and functional.
Our work is guided by best practice and research, including the Oxford Centre for Enablement assessment framework. We look at a child’s posture across the full 24-hour cycle and make recommendations for specialist equipment suited to their individual needs. This may include sleep systems, lying supports, standing frames, supportive seating, wheelchairs, posture management aids and orthoses. We also work closely with families and the wider therapy team to ensure strategies are practical and sustainable at home, in school and in the community.
Who is it for?
For children with complex physical disabilities who spend prolonged periods supported in one position, and who are at risk of developing pain, contractures or changes to body shape.
