Developmental Delay

What is Developmental Delay?

A child may reach milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling or walking later than expected. This can be due to many different reasons, and each child’s journey is unique.

Common challenges

* Delayed motor skills such as sitting, crawling, walking or running
* Difficulty with balance or stamina once walking develops
* Frequent tripping or tip-toe walking
* Reduced play opportunities compared with peers
* Weakness or low stamina
* Anxiety for parents and carers about “catching up”

How physiotherapy can help

* Early intervention to support rolling, sitting, crawling and walking
* Coaching families in play and daily routines that build motor skills
* Gait assessment and practical strategies for walking concerns
* Clear, achievable goals for mobility and participation
* Support with footwear, splints or orthotics if needed
* Guidance for nursery and school staff
