Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD)

EDS, hEDS and HSD are inherited connective tissue disorders, with symptoms including joint hypermobility, elastic skin, easily bruised; and chronic muscles and bones pain. Other related symptoms may include osteoporosis, gastrointestinal issues, and cardiovascular issues. Joint dislocations and subluxations can commonly occur due to altered muscle tone, impaired proprioception, and repeated overstretching.

When we assess a child with EDS, hEDS or HSD, we will discuss the main problems and help to determine the physical and functional difficulties. During the paediatric physiotherapy assessment, we will look at posture, ranges of movement, strength, stability, and walking skills.

The physiotherapy treatment may include:
Working towards realistic functional goals
Addressing weakness and tightness
Addressing poor proprioception
Improving fitness
Care of dislocations and subluxations.
Education and self-management

The StarPhysio therapy team are highly experienced paediatric physiotherapists and can treat tEDS, hEDS or HSD both in the hydrotherapy pool and on land.
