NMD are a broad group of genetic conditions that impair the function of the muscles, either directly, with a pathology of the voluntary muscle, or indirectly, with a pathology of the nerves or neuromuscular junctions.
NMD are quite distinct from other neurological conditions and therefore require specific assessment and management. Examples include Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, Charcot Marie Tooth DIsease, Friedreich’s Ataxia, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
The StarPhysio therapy team are highly experienced physiotherapists and have a wide range of clinical experience of NMD in the community (nurseries, schools and homes), and in the hydrotherapy pool. We work closely with our clients and their families to identify the activities that matter to them at different ages and stages of the pathology.
