Aquatic Therapy

What is Aquatic therapy?

Aquatic therapy (formerly known as hydrotherapy) refers to treatments, exercises or functional activities performed in a warm water pool for therapeutic benefit. Sessions are always delivered by a suitably qualified physiotherapist or specialist trained Physiotherapy Technician. The unique properties of water create an environment where movement can be easier, safer and more enjoyable. Warm water reduces muscle tone and spasm, buoyancy supports body weight to make movement less effortful and resistance provides a natural way to build strength and endurance.

Aquatic therapy can help children improve mobility, postural control, strength and balance while also supporting confidence and participation in physical activity. For some children it offers opportunities to practice movements that may be difficult on land, making it a valuable part of rehabilitation and long-term management.

We specialise in aquatic therapy for children and young adults with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and acquired brain injury. Our sessions are tailored to each child’s goals and abilities, with the focus always on promoting well being, enrichment, development and participation in meaningful activities.

Who is it for?

Children and young people with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, developmental delay and other neurological or physical conditions. It is particularly helpful for children who experience high muscle tone, postural difficulties, pain or challenges with mobility on land.
