Neuromuscular Disorders (NMD)

What are NMD’s?

Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) are a broad group of genetic conditions that affect how muscles work.
They may involve:

* A problem with the voluntary muscles themselves
* A problem with the nerves that control the muscles
* A problem at the neuromuscular junction (where nerves and muscles connect)
NMDs are distinct from other neurological conditions and therefore require specific, tailored assessment and management.

Examples of NMD’s

* Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
* Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT)
* Friedreich’s Ataxia
* Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

Common challenges

* Muscle weakness
* Fatigue and reduced stamina*
* Loss of skills or mobility over time
* Contractures or scoliosis
* Challenges with daily activities and participation in school and play

How physiotherapy can help

* Maintains strength and flexibility for as long as possible
* Provides strategies for managing fatigue and conserving energy
* Supports safe mobility with or without equipment
* Encourages participation in daily life, school and leisure activities
* Prevents secondary complications such as joint stiffness and posture problems
